J.J. Connington is a pen name for Alfred Walter Stewart. He was a Scottish academic and novelist whose career consisted of both science and literature. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1880. He was a Professor of Chemistry at Queen’s University in Belfast.
He produced over twenty detective novels and introduced psychological mysteries with complex plots and puzzles woven into his stories. He created the detective Sir Clinton Driffield, who was a main character in many of his books, including Murder in the Maze. He also dabbled in science fiction and is known also for Nordenholt’s Million, which became a classic. He also published respected chemistry textbooks and was a noted researcher; he is credited with introducing the term "isobar" in nuclear chemistry.
